Coconut oil has long been available for use in the kitchen, however it has never really taken off as a standard cooking or baking oil. Despite the fact that there is some valid reasoning behind using unrefined coconut oil for certain types of foods or to help out with short-term weight loss, coconut oil simply isn’t very healthy if used in your day to day cooking routine.
The main reason why people think coconut oil is a good oil to use on a frequent basis usually has to do with the fact that coconut oil has been shown in a number of clinical studies to aid in weight loss.
It’s a fact that coconut oil helps your body use fat stores and that this helps you lose weight, the problem however is that coconut oil is not an appetite suppressant like grapeseed oil, nor is it heart healthy like olive oil is.
Coconut oil is a saturated fat and if consumed routinely, as it would be if it was used in a normal day to day cooking regimen, it would help contribute to deteriorating arterial health. Saturated fats are well known to be bad for you because they are so greatly associated with arterial disease, heart disease, and stroke.
This is not to say that coconut oil will cause these things, but using it over olive oil will not give you the heart healthy benefits of olive oil, which is well known to fight these same problems. Coconut oil is also more difficult to cook with because it’s harder to find in stores, it is a solid at room temperature, and it doesn’t change the flavor profile of foods as much as olive oil does. This makes all of your foods slightly less flavorful.
If you are looking to cook a little more healthily then coconut oil should probably not be your first choice for use on a daily basis. It may have some slight benefits in the short term when it comes to weight loss but it doesn’t have any of the long term benefits of cooking with olive oil.
