My partner has a nail fungus infection on her big toe. The nail has started to thicken, there is a yellow streak all along one side of the nail and the surface is becoming pitted. At least she is not in any pain and can walk around fine, but I wish she would get rid of this terrible nail fungus for a number of reasons.

nail fungus, nail fungus infectionFirstly, we never go to the beach anymore or even to the local swimming pool. The reason for this is embarrassment.

My partner doesn’t want to walk around with her ugly yellow nail on show. She does occasionally paint over the fungus with a dark nail paint, but I know this is not helping get rid of the infection and could be making matters worse.

The second thing I hate abut nail fungus infections is that nail fungus treatment times are very long indeed. My partner can only be considered completely free of nail fungus after a complete healthy nail cycle, and that can take up to 12 months.

Third, her treatment involves a daily application routine. So every night after her shower and before bed she has to apply her Curanail nail lacquer. It’s a pain, and she occasionally forgets a treatment. I’m hoping she’ll be able to develop a steady routine going forward.

Fourth, we can no longer share nail instruments and I always have to double check that I am not using her nail clippers by mistake. I’ve also started to wear rubber flip flops in the shower so that I don’t also get infected.

The fifth thing I hate about nail fungus is that she no longer goes running. She’s worried that enclosing her feet in tight fitting athletic shoes will encourage more fungal infections to start.

She has read somewhere that fungi thrive in warm, dark and damp environments and she’s worried that sweaty feet in airless sports shoes will make matters worse. I’ve told her that as long as she washes and dries her feet after exercise it’s probably OK, but I understand her concern and I realize she doesn’t want to do anything that might make the problem worse.
