One reason why the lemon water diet could be considered one of the best crash diets is that it follows the concept of “cleansing”. The idea is that eliminating the consumption of toxins, coupled with the flushing of those that already exist will result in a “cleaner” body. This also can lead to dramatic weight loss, since the calorie restrictions of crash diets are extremely strict.



Because of these restrictions, even crash diets that work are not designed to be followed for more than 3 to 7 days. An adult female typically needs 1,500 calories to simply perform life-sustaining functions, while an adult male needs about 1,800 calories. If calories are restricted too severely for too long, it is possible to lose muscle mass instead of fat. Those muscles are important because the more muscle you have, the faster you will burn calories.

That being said, short-term crash diets can have psychological and motivational benefits. Many people claim that the harsh restrictions they have to face for a few days of a crash diet mentally prepares them for a new workout plan or a new balanced diet. Also, the idea of “cleansing,” despite lacking much scientific backing, provides motivation and another kind of psychological preparedness, a kind of purification that many people find appealing.

The lemon water diet is also known as the Master Cleanse. The ingredients are simple enough: lemon juice, maple syrup, and cayenne pepper all diluted in filtered water. Maple syrup and lemons contain important nutrients such as zinc, manganese, and vitamin C, which protect the immune system. The cayenne pepper speeds up the metabolism, and the water carries toxins to your organs to be eliminated.

The biggest drawback to this plan is that the duration of the Master Cleanse is meant to be 40 days. Add this timeline to the fact that solid foods are not allowed with the Master Cleanse, and motivation can wane quickly.

In order for the lemon water diet to be included among the list of the best crash diets, it would need to last at the most 7 days.  The concept of the Master Cleanse diet is hypothetically very effective for weight loss, but the benefits of this extreme type of crash dieting do not outweigh the drawbacks that increase as the 40 days progress. A shorter excursion into the lemon water diet could be exactly the motivation you need to start getting healthy.
