Low Carbohydrate High Protein Diets – How Do They Rate?

Each year, millions of people fail in their quest to lose weight. Fad diets in general can lead to weight gain over time and often do more harm than good. No one diet suits everyone. The key to losing weight is to eat less energy than you burn up.

Those who successfully lose weight and keep it off typically eat breakfast on a regular basis, follow a low-fat diet, monitor their weight regularly, and exercise almost daily. They are not consumed with the thoughts of having to follow a low carb diet, a high protein diet, or any of the other hundreds of diets out there, but are more interested in a healthy eating plan that they can sustain indefinitely.

New research has found that Atkins-style diets can lead to clogged arteries and may increase the risk of heart disease and stroke. The Harvard Medical School professor who launched the study has even ditched his own low carb, high protein lifestyle after initial findings.

THE ATKINS DIET

Atkins is the most famous of the low carbohydrate regimes, banning carbohydrates such as flour, sugar and potatoes, while allowing protein and fat. Some fruit and vegetables are also restricted on the diet. After being mired in controversy; the Atkins diet has evolved in recent years, and now includes a small amount of low carb pasta and bread.

Research suggests that, at least in animals, these diets could be having adverse cardiovascular effects. The studies are still in the early stages and experts say the same changes may not occur in humans.

Any Atkins-style diet is a novelty approach to eating, encouraging bad eating habits for short-term weight loss, at the expense of long-term health. The Heart Foundation doesn’t recommend foods high in saturated and trans fat, which have been shown to increase the risk of heart disease.

CABBAGE SOUP DIET

This diet has been around for decades and is nutritionally inadequate. It includes mainly fruit and vegetables with a little protein later in the week. It is low in calcium, iron, zinc, protein, carbohydrate and healthy fats.

Following the cabbage soup diet for much longer than a week could prove dangerous. It will result in loss of fluid and muscle and once you stop the diet you will stack the weight back on again. It is not a long term way of eating and does nothing to help people develop healthy eating habits.

CSIRO DIET

The CSIRO Total Well Being diet is a higher-protein, moderate-carbohydrate, lower-fat weight-loss plan. While it recommends more animal-based protein-rich foods and less carbohydrate-rich foods than the government’s Australian Guide To Healthy Eating, it still meets the nutritional needs of most people by including fruit, vegetables, wholegrain breads and cereals.

Some people already eat more meat and protein foods than recommended by more conventional weight loss diets and may therefore find this diet easier to adopt than other eating plans. The diet promotes lean cuts of meat in line with current dietary recommendations.

Scientific studies into the Total Well Being diet showed that over 12 months, weight loss on this diet was the same as on a conventional higher-carbohydrate weight-loss diet. However, it is a better alternative to many fad diets because it is based on evidence and was developed by respected Australian nutrition researchers.

MACROBIOTIC DIET

The macrobiotic diet involves eating wholegrain foods, vegetables, fruit, legumes, fish and nuts. The aim is to eat minimal amounts of processed foods that are high in dietary fiber.

While these foods are healthy, some important nutrient-rich foods are eliminated, including dairy food and meats. The macrobiotic diet may be low in calcium, iron, zinc, vitamin B12 and vitamin D. While it is possible to follow a healthy macrobiotic diet that meets nutritional needs, it does take careful planning and some people may find this difficult to do.

It is easier and more practical to eat a well-balanced diet that includes foods from all food groups, such as wholegrain breads and cereals, fruits and vegetables, dairy food or a calcium-rich alternative, meat and meat products, and a small amount of healthy fats and oils.

Dr. Atkins Diet – High Protein Low Carb

Developed by Dr. Robert C. Atkins in the 1970’s, the Atkins Diet is a high protein low carb diet that has been modified from its original structure of virtually ‘zero carb foods’, eliminating almost all carbohydrates from the diet regardless of where they came from, to allowing you, over time, to gradually add some carbs back into your diet.

Dr. Atkins wrote many books about the Atkins Diet detailing the four phases involved in the low carb diet plan which include the Induction Phase, Ongoing Weight Loss Phase, Pre-Maintenance Phase, and the Lifetime Maintenance Phase.

The Atkins diet is also known as a high protein low carb diet because, in the absence of carbs, our calories must come from proteins and fats.

The diet is set up in structured phases, with the first being the most restricted, as is normal for many diets. In fact, because of such severe restrictions in the first two weeks – the Induction Phase – some people skip it altogether and just go into the second phase, the Ongoing Weight Loss Phase(OWL).

Ketosis And The High Protein Low Carb Diet


Sugars in carbohydrates require the body to produce a lot of insulin, which enables the body to convert more food into fat in the form of triglycerides, and this is stored in the body, resulting in weight gain. However, by severely restricting carbohydrates in the diet, the body goes into a state of ‘ketosis’, creating energy by burning its own fat for fuel.


Following a low carb or ‘ketosis’ diet (sometimes also called the ‘ketogenic’ diet) causes your body to derive energy from ketones which are the fuel created from the breakdown of the body’s fat stores, and which tend to suppress the appetite.

We either feel that we have eaten enough very quickly, or we may not feel very hungry at all, causing the process of using our fat reserves for energy.

In order to bring on ketosis in the Induction Phase, dieters are permitted only 20 grams of carbohydrates per day, then gradually increasing those limits until they find the maximum number they can eat each day without gaining weight.

A percentage of those carbohydrates must come in the form of green vegetables such as salad greens, broccoli, spinach, asparagus, and green beans. (The average person on a standard Western diet consumes around 300 grams of carbohydrates per day).

If you are a meat and dairy foods eater, following a high protein low carb diet plan such as the Atkins diet menu can be a refreshing change from other weight loss programs, which can help motivate you to stick with the diet. However, though the foods allowed on the diet include liberal amounts of all meats, fowl, poultry, fish and shellfish, along with eggs and cheese among other things, Dr. Atkins stresses in the more recent revisions of his book that the diet is not a license to eat unlimited amounts of fatty meats and cheeses.

And Atkins Nutritionals, a company founded by Dr. Atkins to promote his diet and to sell Atkins diet foods and other products, recommends that a person limit their consumption of saturated fats to no more than 20% while on the diet.

Drawbacks Of High Protein Low Carb Diets



You must learn a whole new way of figuring out what to eat when you follow any high protein low carb diet, including the Atkins diet. This involves keeping track of the number of grams of carbohydrate that are in everything you consume which can be very boring. In fact, many people complain that they do not get enough variety or essential nutrients while following these types of diets, but this can be overcome by making an effort to include more vegetables and/or supplements in your diet, but Dr. Atkins does not tend to focus on these points as much when discussing the Atkins diet.

Opponents of the Atkins diet say that the initial low carb weight loss one experiences with the diet is common with most any diet, and that it can be contributed to water reduction rather than fat loss. Others say that the weight loss may be the result of a lower consumption of food energy rather than the lack of carbohydrates in the diet, as well as fewer available food choices.

Since many who follow the high protein low carb Atkins diet tend to eat a lot of saturated fat – which research has shown can contribute to heart disease as well as other conditions – you should consult with your doctor before starting this (or any other) diet, and have your cholesterol levels checked and regularly monitored while you’re following the diet.

The Low Carb Diet – Lose Weight Fast!

In the years that I have struggled with my own weight, I have researched and tried many different methods of weight loss in search of ways to lose weight that I could live with – but most only resulted in the loss of a few pounds, which I always gained back in short order.


This same scenario also played out when I tried a low carb diet a couple of years ago, but I learned how to work with it and it has turned out to work pretty well for me.

What I mean by ‘working with it’ is that whenever the pounds start to creep back on or I need to lose a few pounds fairly quickly (the low carb diet is great for quick weight loss) I just eat low carb meals for a few days, throttling back on the carbohydrates until I reach the desired results.

Like many others who have to watch their weight, I have major carbohydrate cravings that I have to constantly struggle with.

So it was not realistic for me to think that I could give most of them up permanently, and for that reason I didn’t even try the low carb diet for many years. Instead, I chose to try all kinds of weight loss pills, programs, and diets – all with disappointing results.

Low Carb Diet Myths


But my reason for writing about the low carb diet here is to address some of the misconceptions that have swirled around the diet for many years. I think a lot of it actually started with the Atkins diet, which somehow seemed to give a lot of people the impression that you could eat a diet loaded with fatty meats, fried foods, dairy, and other high-fat foods – forget the fruits and vegetables – and yet remain perfectly healthy.

I have read a lot about Atkins and other low carb diet plans, and that was not the impression I got at all. In fact, even in the Induction phase of the Atkins diet – which is the most restrictive phase and only lasts 2 weeks – you are advised to eat something like 15% carbs each day, in the form of salads.

The primary thing that I see the low carb diet trying to eliminate in the diet are sugary processed foods that have no nutritional value in the first place.

low carb diet,low carb meals,how to lose weight fast Vegetables and fruits are loaded with fiber, as well as vitamins and minerals and are thought to be partly responsible for lower risks of many serious health problems (including heart disease and some cancers) in people who eat diets that include large amounts of vegetables.

Therefore, I would be very hesitant to even consider a diet that excludes these healthy foods that are, in my opinion, essential for a healthy body.

The ‘anti – low carb’ folks would have you believe that you are not allowed any vegetables on the diet, but this is not true. The healthier versions of the diet focus on nutritious, healthy food, and promote leaner, healthier cuts of meat along with non-starchy vegetables and low-sugar fruits. This allows you to still lose weight quickly and at the same time maintain a leaner, healthier body.

  • Unhealthy foods such as bacon, hot dogs and lunch meats that have a high fat content should be eaten sparingly or avoided altogether.

Some health benefits that have been commonly reported (and attributed to following a low carb diet) are listed below. And even though not every person that follows the low carb lifestyle will experience all of these benefits, you can at the very least expect to lose some weight.

  • Limit your caffeine.
  • Incorporate some sort of physical activity into your life each day.
  • Take a vitamin and fiber supplement.
  • Make sure you have the appropriate foods and snacks in the house at all times to avert unnecessary temptations.
  • Learn to substitute lower carb ingredients in as many of your favorite dishes as possible. You might be surprised at how appetising low carb meals really are.

As always, before starting any diet, including a low carb diet, you should consult with your physician. Your current health and any medications you take may be a determining factor on how long you should follow this diet.

Once you have achieved your time goal for the juice fast, you can move into the fruit portion of the fast. Be sure to include as much raw food as possible as you transition to a diet of foods that you can continue to eat and maintain your weight loss long term.
