The Dukan Diet is a high protein low carbohyhdrate diet and is similar in many ways to the Atkins Diet which is also a low carb diet. However, whereas Atkins recommends eating a relatively high fat content, Dukan concentrates on low fat protein, such as chicken and fish.


There has been a lot of controversy about low carb diets for some time now, and it all started with Atkins many years ago.

One of the big questions which has divided medical opinion and still does is this – low fat or low carb – which is best for weight loss and which is most healthy?

I personally am a big fan of low carb, so I’m probably slightly biased in that it works for me.

I tried to lose weight for many years on a low calorie – low fat diet, as recommended by most dieticians, however I found that I could only lose weight by going hungry, and there’s only so long that you can live like that. Protein and fat fill you up more and you don’t feel hungry, so it’s much more sustainable.

Another point worth making is that critics of low carb diets often seem to confuse “low carb” with “no carb”. Diets like the Atkins plan and the Dukan Diet plan start off by limiting carbohydrates very strictly, however, they do introduce carbohydrates gradually over the course of the diet.

It is recommended that you end up eating a certain amount of carbs on a long-term basis, it’s just about finding the right level for you. Personally I find that eating between 60-70 grams of carbohydrate per day works for me.

I have seen a glimmer of light recently in diet and health news circles. More and more people are starting to question the role of sugar in the diet, and studies are beginning to emerge which show that refined sugar and not fat, is the true culprit in the obesity epidemic.

I am sticking to my guns in this debate. I am “livin’ la vida low carb” as they say, and loving it!
